Broken Torsion Spring
Springs are what lift your door. Typical garage doors weigh from 160 to 500 pounds yet your opener lifts a maximum of about 60 pounds.
If a spring breaks, disconnect your opener immediately to halt any damage being done. Have your springs replaced by a professional, they are very dangerous.
Types of Springs: There are extension springs and torsion springs. An extension spring needs to be replaced with a torsion system.
- Extension springs are extremely dangerous and can cause death or damage to you, your house or your car. Extension springs can fly across the room when they break.
- The torsion spring system is not as dangerous. It has springs wrapped around a tube at the top of your door. On average these last 6 to 10 years, depending on usage. High cycle springs last 15 to 20 and are available upon request.
Galvanized Springs:
These are torsion springs made with a different material. Galvanized springs have become very popular since they are $20 more and last 2-4 years longer. There are very few companies in Denver who install galvanized springs. These springs come with a 10 year warranty and are what we recommend.
